Does Evander Kane’s terminated contract improve Thomas Hurtle’s chances of renewing?

Just hours after Evander Kane received an unconditional waiver from the Sharks with the intention of terminating what was left of his seven-year, $49 million contract, Thomas Hurtle brushed past Martin Jones to score his 20th goal of the season. season.

Perhaps it was kismet. A week ago, when the Sharks were trying to get rid of a high-priced deal, Hurtle showed how valuable he still is to the organization.

The question now is whether the Sharks will take the money they potentially save on Kane’s contract and funnel it into a renewal offer for Hurtle.

Pierre Lebrun of TSN and The Athletic revealed on Thursday that he expects the Sharks to return to Camp Hurtle next month to discuss an extension. If the talks go nowhere, then attention will be turned to the March 21 NHL trade deadline. Hurtle’s contract contains an amended no-trade clause whereby he only agrees to trade with one of the three teams.

Barring something unforeseen, there is no doubt that Hurtle’s next contract will be lucrative or at least exceed the $22.5 million four-year extension he signed with the Sharks in July 2018. plays in all situations and now appears to be on track to surpass his record of 35 goals set in 2018-19.

It is because of this enticing combination that Hurtle, under consideration as an unrestricted free agent, is widely considered a top target approaching the trade deadline.

All of a sudden, however, it appeared that the Sharks had one less expensive long-term contract on the books and a bit more room in the salary cap to try to keep Hurtle past that point.

Kane’s deal was valued at an average of $7 million a year at the NHL level, and until a couple of weeks ago it looked like any parting ways with San Jose would cost the Sharks dearly.

The best-case scenario from the Sharks’ point of view could be to trade Kane and keep half of his cap for the next three seasons, as an off-season buyout would keep millions of dead money on the ledgers for the next six years.

All of this could have prevented the Sharks from making a competitive contract offer to Hertl.

But Sharks management got another Christmas present.

Believing that Kane violated his contract by not returning to the Sharks’ AHL affiliate until a week after he was supposed to and violated AHL COVID-19 protocol by crossing the US border into Canada on December 29, the Sharks canceled what was left . deals over the weekend.

Kane and the NHL Players Association dispute both of these findings and filed a complaint last Sunday, which is expected to be heard by an impartial arbitrator in an expedited manner. Earlier this week, the NHL notified all 32 teams that it was looking into the process by which Kane crossed the border and landed in Vancouver.

It is possible that the Sharks and Kane will come to an agreement before a case is heard in which the forward can recoup some of the $22.8 million he was still owed, and the Sharks’ marginal hit will decrease over the course of long period of time.

It’s also possible that the referee will reinstate Kane’s contract, bringing the Sharks back to square one. However, Forbes and TSN legal analyst Eric Makramalla told the news organization this past weekend that he thought it was unlikely, given that this latest alleged violation of protocol was the second in less than six months by Kane.

The Sharks currently have around $63 million in salary tied to 15 players, according to CapFriendly. The cap on the NHL’s salary cap next season is projected to be $82.5 million.

New signings for defenseman Mario Ferraro and forward Jonathan Dalén will take up some of that space, as will signings for other restricted free agents such as defenseman Nikolai Knyzhov and forward Noah Gregor. However, the Sharks should have enough cap space to try and keep Hurtle long-term if that’s what they want.
