Dolphins DT Christian Wilkins Returns To Training, But Gaming Status Remains Unclear

Christian Wilkins has never missed a game due to injury in his three-year career with the Miami Dolphins, but chances are the streak could end and end this week.

Wilkins, who missed two games in 2020 due to COVID-19, is treating a calf injury he likely suffered during Miami’s 22-10 victory over the Buffalo Bills last Thursday.

Wilkins, who has started 36 of 40 games he’s played since the Dolphins picked him in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft, played outside of practice session on Wednesday. Since Thursday’s training session is a walk, it is difficult to gauge how much his injury will affect his performance.

Wilkins, with 44 tackles, two sacks and a forced one groping, is one of the Dolphins’ strongest defensive linemen. He’s keeping up with one of his best stats seasons and will be difficult to replace due to his versatility, which allows a 6ft 4,310lb player to play all over the defense.

If he doesn’t play Sunday’s game against the New York Jets (2-7), the Dolphins will likely rely on Zack Zeeler and Adam Butler to play more clicks. Both have been used as role-playing players in certain packages that usually come into play when Wilkins is filmed.

Butler, who has 13 tackles and one bag this season, is used as the passing specialist, while Zeeler, who has 35 tackles and two fumbles, is used mainly on the run….

Dolphins add a new protector

Dolphins swapped backup defenders, replacing Jake Dolegal with Jake Luton in the training squad this week. Dolegal spent a month with the team after quarterback Reed Sinnett was announced by the Philadelphia Eagles.

Luton, the standout Oregon player who was picked by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the sixth round of the 2020 NFL Draft, started three games for the Jaguar last season and they all lost. He completed 54 percent of passes at 624 yards, with two touchdowns and six interceptions.

Luton became available when he was released from the Seattle Seahawks training team earlier this week.

Miami re-signed security Sheldrick Redwin to the training squad, where he will take place Jamal Perrywho was upgraded to a list of 53 people to eliminate the likely absence Elijah Campbell, which is mainly used in special commands.

In late October, the Dolphins signed Redwine, a former University of Miami Distinguished Representative, to a roster of 53. But he hasn’t played in a single game since joining the team and Miami released him on Tuesday.

Perry, a backup defender and nickel quarterback, has spent the past two seasons as one of Miami’s top shooters, but his fight during training camp cost him a spot on the 53-man roster.

Perry has played in three games this season and has tackled the ball twice.
