Dolphins expected to stick to Tua Tagovailoa no longer chasing Deshawn Watson

The next Miami Dolphins head coach will most likely have to like quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.

As the Dolphins prepared a list of seven interviews for the vacancy created by the firing of former coach Brian Flores, several reports surfaced Saturday morning indicating the franchise plans to move forward with Tagovailoa as quarterback in his third NFL season.

It also effectively ended the Dolphins’ prosecution of Houston Texans defenseman Deshawn Watson, an elite quarterback who didn’t play in the 2021 season amid 22 civil lawsuits alleging him for sexual harassment, and two of them for sexual harassment. Miami, with Flores as head coach, was heavily involved in Watson’s trade negotiations throughout the offseason and preseason, and up until last season’s trade deadline.

NFL network reported that there is a “plan for creating and maintaining [Tagovailoa]”.

ESPN added: “The chances of the Dolphins chasing or acquiring Texas QB Deshawn Watson have been greatly reduced, if not eliminated. … Flores was interested in exploring the Watson deal, but others in the organization, including owner Stephen Ross, were not.”

Tagovailoa completed 67.8 percent of passes for 2,653 yards, 6.8 per attempt, 16 touchdowns and 10 interceptions, adding three rushing touchdowns in the 2021 season. He missed four games with isolated rib and finger injuries, most of the loss to the Buffalo Bills on September 19 after losing early at home, and the first half of a win against the Baltimore Ravens on November 11.

Returning early in the second half against Baltimore, he began a four-game streak with a quarterback rating above 100, a solid stretch during Miami’s seven-game winning streak that followed a seven-game losing streak. Tagovailoa, however, failed to repeat the same success over the final four weeks of the season, including an ugly game in rainy, cold Nashville when he lost 34-3 to the Tennessee Titans, which ultimately eliminated the Dolphins from the game in playoffs.

Ross, in comments on the Monday following his split from Flores, said the quarterback’s decisions played “no difference.”

“I trust Tua a lot. The next head coach will work with him or with someone else, ”said Ross. “I saw him grow up. I think he is a wonderful young man.

Ross added that he had “no plans” to reopen trade talks on Watson.

During the Dolphins’ pursuit of Watson, which resulted in them pulling out of the deal by the November 2 deadline, Flores constantly repeated “Tua is our quarterback” and dodged questions about rumors and reports of Miami’s interest in Watson.

Dolphins general manager Chris Grier spoke the day after the deadline and explained the organization’s reasons for looking into the possibility of a Watson trade: “If there is an available player in the league who is considered one of the best players in the league at any position, you look at it and try and go for it.”

Some of the Dolphin coaching candidates they have scheduled interviews seem to agree with the idea of building around Tagovailoa and developing it. Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Brian Duboll coached Tagovailoa during his freshman college season in Alabama. Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, like Tagovailoa, was a short, left-handed quarterback who starred at Boise State College but was a career reserve as an undrafted player in the NFL.

The Dolphins, according to ESPN, plan to interview Daball and defensive coordinator Bill Leslie Frazier on Sunday after the Buffalo Buffalo’s Saturday playoff game against the New England Patriots.

The other candidates they are set to interview as of Saturday are Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel, Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator Vance Joseph and Los Angeles Rams running back coach Thomas Browne.
