Ecological Transition taught COP28 the usefulness of the climate projection tool developed in the Canary Islands

The Department of Ecological Transition and Energy of the Government of the Canary Islands, within the framework of the 28th edition of the United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP28) held in Dubai, demonstrated the usefulness of the climate projections tool developed by Canary. Islands, which allows you to view climate change forecasts targeted at islands. This presentation took place at a discussion table located in the Spanish Pavilion, where various autonomous communities and national entities presented their initiatives in favor of climate change mitigation.

The general director of Ecological Transition and Fight against Climate Change, Ángel Montañés, and Juan Carlos Pérez, researcher of the Earth and Atmosphere Observation Group (GOTA) of the University of La Laguna, attended this summit to teach before their superiors 198 members, among countries, sovereign entities and regional organizations, the operation, usefulness and exportability of this projection program. José Juan Lorenzo, manager of Promotur Turismo de Islas Canarias, is also in the framework of this presentation.

The general director of the Ecological Transition and Fight against Climate Change, Ángel Montañés, emphasized that the tool “is welcome, especially in countries that have islands in their territory” and also appreciates the presence of the Canary Islands, pointing out that ” This summit allowed us to create synergies with other regions of the world that have situations similar to ours, proving the willingness to work together and the involvement that exists in the fight against climate change.”

Likewise, within the framework of the presentation, Montañés emphasized that this tool “provides real data that will later help us make decisions and work in search of a future adapted and prepared for climate challenges that we face.” “We know that there is climate change, but now we need real data to know where we are and where we want to go, in the line of innovation, development and sustainability that we are looking for for the Canary Islands and other regions,” said Montañés.

Finally, he highlighted the work and progress of the project, pointing out that “this pioneering tool was born and developed in the Canary Islands, by scientists from the Islands.” Something that now “will be key so that other island territories can also make their own predictions, which will allow them to better adapt and adopt mitigation measures against climate change.”

Juan Carlos Pérez, GOTA researcher, explains how the mentioned tool works, giving details about the particularities of the Canary Islands and the use of this study in the islands. Within the framework of the presentation, Pérez emphasized that with this tool “we represent Macaronesia, but any island in the world can benefit from this technology, because we have studied its efficiency.” Also, he pointed out that thanks to its development “a problem has been solved in small islands, because this instrument offers concrete information, with reliable forecasts and with a lot of detail about what the future will be.” waiting for them.”

On the other hand, José Juan Lorenzo, manager of Promotur Turismo de Islas Canarias, emphasized that the Archipelago leads the decarbonization of the destination to become a pioneer region of sustainability.

Climate projections for the Canary Islands

The presentation tool of the COP28 is an instrument capable of visualizing climate change forecasts aimed at the islands, also presenting specific results and forecasts about the Canary Islands. The data that has been collected for three years and that has been partially exposed in the presentation of the results of the PLANCLIMAC project, led by this Ministry.

The result is the creation of a series of high definition projections for two different periods throughout the 21st century and for two different climate change scenarios. In them, it is possible to imagine realities such as an increase in temperature, a decrease in rainfall, a decrease in thermal comfort or predictions about an increase in unfavorable conditions for fires.

These data can be consulted publicly, in the Territorial Information System of the Canary Islands (SITCAN) and on the website of the Ministry of Ecological Transition.
