The primary role of our government is to ensure that all people can enjoy the rights that are considered inalienable in accordance with our constitution, life, freedom and the pursuit of happiness, and to help us deal with situations where our rights come into conflict.
  • How would you rate Minnesota’s response to the coronavirus? What would you do differently? In the state, our response was strong, but Governor Waltz relinquished emergency powers too quickly, leaving cities and school districts unable to protect their communities, including their children. John Van Oeveren

  • Age: 44 years
  • What qualifies you for this position? I have 15 years of experience in the public sector in government budgeting, data analysis and administration – for over eight years I have worked in finance and data in schools in Minnesota. I was also a certified high school social science teacher with real classroom experience. I received my master’s degree in public administration from New York University.
  • What would be your top priorities if elected? My top priorities are student and staff safety, true equity, student mental health, expanded early childhood programs, and green schools. These priorities are complementary to maintaining the high quality of Mounds View public school teachers.
  • What do you think is the main role of government? I believe that government is a social contract for mutual support of our society. It represents our democratic collective commitment to help our families and neighbors grow, be safe and prosperous. From the point of view of public schools, it is about meeting the needs of children to become the best version of themselves.
  • How would you rate Minnesota’s response to the coronavirus? What would you do differently? Our state has succeeded at the beginning of the pandemic. We’ve had better results than many other states. I think Governor Waltz’s loss of peacetime emergency powers has prevented counties from responding to the challenges posed by the Delta option.
