Emirates sentences ex-Khashoggi lawyer to prison

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates ( Associated Press) – The United Arab Emirates has sentenced the former lawyer of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi to three years in prison on charges of money laundering and tax evasion.

Emirati news agency WAM reported on Saturday night that the lawyer, a US citizen, Asim Ghafoor, would also have to pay a fine of $816,748 for the absentee trial.

Emirati newspaper The National reported that Ghafoor would be deported to the US after completing his sentence.

Emirates said the arrests took place in coordination with the United States “to combat international crime”. Emirati state media reported that US officials have sought Emirate’s help in investigating Ghafoor’s alleged tax evasion and suspicious financial transactions.

The group reported that Gafoor, a Virginia-based civil rights lawyer who represented Khashoggi and his girlfriend Hatice Cengiz, was stopping for a wedding in Istanbul on Thursday when Emirati security agents stopped him and detained him in Abu Dhabi. sent. ,

DAWN said Ghafoor was unaware of any allegations against him and had stayed in Dubai less than a year ago without issue.

The US Embassy in Abu Dhabi did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
