Emmys 2021: Gene Smart and Jason Sudeikis win top comedy acting honors for ‘Hacks’ and ‘Ted Lasso’

HBO series “Hacks” challenged Apple+ series “Ted Lasso” to dominance in the comedy categories at the Emmys, with its stars taking home Best Actress and Actor for Comedy Series on Sunday.

Smart, who plays the Las Vegas comedy legend in “Hacks,” opened up her speech emotionally for her late husband, Richard Gilliland.

“I have to acknowledge my late husband RG, who passed away six months ago yesterday,” Smart said, slightly choking as she spoke. “I wouldn’t be here without him.

“But ‘Hacks’ has been such a thrill,” she continued. “I read it and I said I had to, it checked every box I was looking for.”

“Hacks” also won Best Writing and Best Direction for a Comedy Series earlier in the evening, with co-creator Lucia Aniello sharing the writing award with Jen Statsky and Paul W. Downs, and winning the directing award on its own.

Actor Jason Sudeikis won Best Actor in a Comedy for the title role in “Ted Lasso”, a series he also co-produced, which also won Best Supporting Actress and Actor earlier in the evening.

“Yeah, heck of a year,” said Sudeikis, who dressed like a velvet tuxedo, a step up from the hoodie she wore when she won a Golden Globe for the role earlier this year.

“I would say this show is about families, this show is about mentors and teachers, this show is about teammates.”
