Information about the women who claimed to have been abused by the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein was leaked Wednesday to prosecutors and lawyers who were trying to prove their closeness. Epstein’s partner Ghislaine Maxwell helped recruit and care for women when they were underage.
The information was voluntarily provided to the administrators of the Victim Compensation Fund. Two hundred twenty-five alleged victims provided information and collectively received nearly $ 125 million.
Prosecutors have fought against coercing fund administrators to provide details, arguing that information about the women who filed the lawsuits was irrelevant or unacceptable in the upcoming Maxwell trial. Maxwell’s lawyers argued the opposite.
US District Judge Alison Nathan, Obama’s nominee to preside over the high-profile case, decided this week to order administrators to send information to both sides. She said she would review the material first and decide if some of them should be contained.
The initial production was sent to the judge on Wednesday and she decided to let the parties check it out.
The volume was tied to 6,000-7,000 pages of documents by a law firm representing Jordana Feldman, the fund’s chief administrator.
Separately, Nathan said that the materials “are likely to contain information that (i) will affect people’s privacy and confidentiality, (ii) will be at risk of bias if publicly released, and (iii) will not allowed for disclosure. to the public or disclosed in excess of what is necessary for the trial in this case. “
Strict rules will apply to materials that will be treated as confidential information or strictly confidential.
The first designation means that the materials cannot be disclosed to anyone outside of the parties other than legal professionals, experts, or potential experts or consultants. The latter designation refers to nude, partially nude, or otherwise sexualized material that must be stamped, if filed at all in a case.
Charges leveled against Maxwell include forcing a minor to travel to engage in criminal sexual activity and transporting the minor with the same intent. Her trial is scheduled for November 29. In accordance with federal regulations, only those in the courthouse will be able to observe it.
Alleged victims, Maxwell’s family members and members of the press are guaranteed access.
Maxwell has been in custody since her arrest in the summer of 2020 due to her wealth and connections around the world. She faces up to 50 years in prison if found guilty on all charges.
