But if you thought you were excited about director Greta Gerwig’s vision for the iconic Mattel doll, rest assured that no one is more excited than Eva Mendes.
The typically press-averse star, who shares two daughters with Gosling, has been unusually vocal about her support for the film, especially when it comes to the underwear her longtime partner wears as Ken. Huh.
“I said, ‘Can I have that underwear? Please! I never ask for anything,'” Mendes told the co-host of CBS’s ‘The Talk’ in a recent episode with a laugh. “So, anyway , I have. I’m wearing it now.”
Gosling’s first look as Barbie’s boyfriend was released earlier this month, with the actor in his shirtless glory wearing a cut-off denim vest and his own Kane-branded briefs, apparently now Mendes is in possession.
“Well, at first, I saw the photo and the 14-year-old in me was like, ‘Ah,'” she said. “It’s a funny picture and he’s trying to be funny. So, it worked on all levels.”
“There was something about that image that made me, you know, that little teenager…” he continued.
While Mendes is onboard with Gosling’s new role, he addressed critics of his transformation online, saying, “People know he’s not playing a real person, right? He’s playing a fake person! “
Mendes had an equally enthusiastic reaction to Gosling’s transformation when it was first unveiled on Instagram.
In addition to Gosling and Robbie, who play the title role and produce the film, “Barbie” also stars Kate McKinnon, Alexandra Shipp, Michael Cera, America Ferrera, Nakuti Gatwa, Simu Liu, Issa Rae, Hari Neff and Will Ferrell. Huh.
Robbie encouraged fans not to expect a traditional story about the character, which he acknowledged “comes with a lot of baggage and a lot of nostalgic connections”.
“But with that comes many exciting ways to attack it,” Robbie told British Vogue last year. “People usually hear ‘Barbie’ and think, ‘I know what that movie is going to be,’ and then they hear that Greta Gerwig is writing and directing it, and they say, ‘ Oh well, maybe I can’t…’”
Written by Gerwig and partner, Noah Baumbach, “Barbie” is set to hit theaters on July 21, 2023.
