Evacuation warning lifted as control of rice fire increases

Nevada County — Rice fire prevention in Nevada County rose by 24% Friday night, with key officials raising some evacuation warnings, according to Cal Fire.

The Cal Fire Nevada-Yuba-Placer Unit said in an incident update that as of 7 p.m., wildfires persisted across 904 acres.

“Efforts by personnel working on the Rice Fire have increased controls to 24% today, allowing several areas in Nevada County that were previously under evacuation alert. fully reopenedCal Fire said.

Evacuation orders are in place for the Bridgeport, Rice Crossing and North French Corral areas.

According to Cal Fire, cooler temperatures and rising humidity will aid workers in their efforts to build and improve control lines. Calm winds were expected through the night as well, but on Saturday, winds of 8-12 mph with gusts of 20 mph are possible.

“And thus many areas of fire that are near uncontrolled areas of fire in the northern parts of the event are still a threat to the surrounding community,” Cal Fire said.

According to Cal Fire, preventing fires from jumping into the Yuba River is a top priority for firefighters. Crews are also focused on ensuring that the fire remains west of Pleasant Valley Road, south of Sweetland Creek and north of Rice Crossing Road.

Cal Fire said the fire was first reported at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Rice Crossing Road area near northern San Juan. The cause was traced to a fire in an uninhabited structure.

According to Cal Fire, 14 firefighters and one civilian were injured when the fire broke out in a steep area along the Yuba River. In addition, the fire destroyed five homes and eight smaller structures, as well as damaged a smaller structure.
