Expensive Texas border plan fails to stop migrant crossings

AUSTIN, Texas ( Associated Press) — A recent attempt to smuggle 53 migrants into Texas, the deadliest in U.S. history, exposes the borders of Republican Greg Abbott, the governor’s Texas massive border security campaign.

After the tragedy, Abbott ordered state troops to inspect more trucks, again expanding a border security mission that cost billions of dollars, called the National Guard Arrest Authority and settled migrants in Washington, D.C. .

Yet a year after they began, Abbott’s plans have not reduced the number of people crossing the border.

Along the Texas border, where officials say the deadly tractor-trailer journey began Monday, officials stopped migrants from crossing illegally 523,000 times between January and May, compared to the same period last year 417,000 more. The numbers show how, at the border with Mexico, the crossings are at their highest level in two decades.

The deadliest human trafficking attempt in US history shows the knock-on of Abbott’s vast border system at a time when two-term governors running for re-election in November blame the administration of President Joe Biden.

Migrant advocates have responded to Abbott’s criticism by saying that Biden is focused on law enforcement.

“Texas is going to take action on our behalf to reduce illegal immigration into the country,” the governor said Wednesday in the border town of Eagle Pass.

He said the state police would start inspection of more tractor-trailers in the wake of the tragedy. He didn’t elaborate on the size or location of the inspection checkpoints, but unlike an inspection effort three months earlier that had halted traffic on the state line for a week, agents would allow every tractor-trailer to enter Texas. Not going to check.

The Texas Department of Public Safety on Friday did not respond to questions about how many trucks had been inspected or whether migrants were found since the governor’s order.

Critics have questioned the transparency and statistics of what is now a $3 billion mission since the launch of Operation Lone Star in the spring of 2021. Some arrests, including those involving small amounts of marijuana at traffic stops, have nothing to do with limits. Security. Following the hasty deployment of the National Guard, some members complained of low morale, late pay and reduced wages.

Since April, Abbott has offered migrants a bus ride to Washington, saying he was bringing the immigration issue to the door of Congress. So far, 3,000 migrants have traveled at a cost of more than $5 million.

Democratic State Sen. Roland Gutierrez, whose district includes the small road near San Antonio where the truck was abandoned, said, “What Greg Abbott wants to do is ‘gotcha’ phrases and gestures that have no real solution.” Is.” “He is reportedly spending 10 crores to defend the border and has not done a single thing to resolve the situation.”

US border officials are stopping migrants at the southern border more often than they have been in at least two decades. Migrants were stopped nearly 240,000 times in May, a third more than the year before.

Comparisons with pre-pandemic levels are difficult because migrants evacuated under public health clearances known as “Title 42” face no legal consequences, encouraging repeated attempts. Officials say that 25 percent of encounters in May were with people who had already been detained at least once last year.
