In fashion as in life, fortune favors the brave – and bravery is one thing we will certainly need in spades if we hope to embrace one of the biggest trends of the AW22 season. Say a terrified ‘hello’ to fashion’s new favorite body part: the pelvis.
Evidently, fashion doesn’t care that most of us have spent the best part of two years tucked away safely with nothing but biscuits and booze for comfort. Fashion wants us to get back out there and embrace pandemic-revenge dressing to make up for all that time lost to loungewear. For AW22, sexy is well and truly back – starting with the hips.
Think Y2K and Noughties-era ultra-low-slung trousers paired with tops cropped from the ever-so-slightly (as at Conner Ives, Missoni and 16Arlington) to just-under-the-breasts (see Blumarine, Poster Girl and Diesel) .
Look to Julia Fox for inspiration, whose penchant for the dangerously low trouser has seen her rock numerous styles, cause Miaou’s to promptly sell out and bravely make the pubis-skimming leather pant her signature months before anyone else.

Oh, and extra points for visible underwear too – whether a hint of thong la Britney, JLo and Xtina, or the purpose-made lace panty-flasher which stole the show at Supriya Lele’s AW22 collection.
The micro-mini skirts of SS22 aren’t going anywhere either, but as hemlines go up, so too do waistlines go down. Miu Miu’s now-cult look from last season is an obvious reference (and has been so popular with the fashion set that it now has its own Instagram), while the trend reached its apex at Diesel with skirts so teeny that they veered into belt territory .

Not all versions of the pelvis-bearing trend require quite as much full-frontal exposure, however. Nensi Dojaka’s AW22 show featured dresses with delicate mesh details to reveal the hip bones, LaQuan Smith went big on cut-outs, Supriya Lele had more subtle flashes of hip peeking out from cleverly draped material, and 16Arlington’s collection made a nod to the trend by unbuttoning tops slightly at the base.
Even Versace, usually proudly and decisively unsubtle with its collections, had a more toned-down and wearable take: combining low-slung skirts with corsets to provide more coverage. Genius.
So whether you opt for the full Y2K, barely-there, out-and-proud look or prefer a more elegant allusion to the existence of your pelvis, the only thing to remember this season is this: it’s all in the hips.
