CHICAGO ( Associated Press) — FIFA plans to announce the host cities for the 2026 World Cup at a news conference in New York on June 16.
Seventeen stadiums in the United States in 16 areas remain in contention for the first 48-team World Cup, with Los Angeles featuring SoFi Stadium in Inglewood and the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, where the 1994 final was played. three stadiums in Mexico and three in Canada.
The 2026 Cup will be the first with three host countries, following selection by FIFA in 2018.
Sixty games will be played in the United States, including all from the quarterfinals. Canada and Mexico will play 10 games each.
Chicao, Minneapolis and Arizona withdrew from the host competition in March 2018 due to what city officials said were excessive financial demands from FIFA. Charlotte, Las Vegas, Salt Lake City and Tampa were eliminated.
Landover, in Maryland, retired in April.
Montreal withdrew last August after the Quebec provincial government withdrew its support. She was replaced in April by Vancouver, which had initially submitted its bid in 2017 but said in March 2018 that it had been rejected for refusing to accept demands from FIFA.
