Filming for My Big Big Greek Wedding 3 begins in Greece

The Thule Portokalos saga continues.

My Big Big Greek Wedding writer and star Nia Vardalos revealed on Tuesday that filming for the third film has finally begun in Athens.

The 59-year-old actress posted the news on Instagram with a video and also thanked her producers at Playtone, Gold Circle, HBO and Focus Features.

“A huge love and thank you to all of you for your support as we waited for filming to begin. Greece baby. Greece,” she signed her clip.

She also made a bombshell video by officially announcing that she would direct the film.

The Canadian native recorded the video from her snow-white hotel room in the Mediterranean country.

“We’re in Greece filming My Big Big Greek Wedding 3 and thank you for all the great messages about just waiting,” Vardalos said.

She noted that she was in her hotel preparing for filming and even gave fans a small snippet of the set.

Back in September, the screenwriter revealed that she had finally completed the script for the third installment of her hilarious family comedy series.

The My Life in Ruins star posted a photo of herself along with her My Big Big Greek Wedding co-stars Lainie Kazan, Louis Mandylor and Jia Karides.

The four gathered to honor the memory of their old friend and co-star Michael Constantine, who died in August.

Vardalos said that the upcoming triquel will focus on Constantine.

“[Michael] told me he couldn’t join us for the third film and he wanted us to continue. I have written the script to reflect Michael’s decision and will always cherish his last messages to me, hoping we can start filming soon,” the Larry Crowne actress wrote. “We miss you Michael, thank you for bringing my words to life with such passion and precision, you will always be with us.”

The premiere of the film “My Big Greek Wedding” took place in 2002. It follows Tula (Vardalos), a 30-year-old Greek woman living in Chicago, who marries a non-Greek man (John Corbett) over the objections of her family. The sequel came out in 2016.

The comedy was a hit and received an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay in 2003.
