Whenever there is talk of uncertainty, large cities such as Los Angeles, New York, or Chicago are usually the focus. However, according to data from NeighborhoodScout, a US neighborhood analysis website and online database, the most dangerous cities tend to be smaller.

Her research shows the 100 most dangerous cities in the United States with populations of 25,000 or more based on violent crime per 1,000 residents.

Violent crimes considered in the analysis include rape, armed robbery, and aggravated assault, according to NeighborhoodScout. The information is based on the latest available national data for the calendar year 2021 and was published in October 2022.

  • Little Rock, Arkansas

  • Kalamazoo, Michigan

  • Gadsden, Alabama

Many of the dangerous cities on this year’s list were on previous lists. However, the city of Bessemer, Alabama, has surpassed the city of Monroe, Louisiana, as the most dangerous city in the United States. Monroe took first place two years in a row.

As for Bessemer, there are 33.18 violent crimes per 1,000 people in the city, and there is a 1 in 30 chance of being a victim of a violent crime in the city.

Second in the ranking is Monroe, with 26.3 violent crimes per 1,000 people. There is a 1 in 38 chance of being a victim of a violent crime in this city.

Saginaw, Michigan, is the third-most dangerous city. There are 25.1 violent crimes per 1,000 people and a 1 in 39 chance of being a victim of a violent crime.

The fourth-most dangerous city is Memphis, Tennessee, with 25.1 violent crimes per 1,000 people and a 1 in 39 chance of being a victim. Detroit, Michigan, ranks fifth with 23 crimes per 1,000 people.
