First touchdown highlights Vikings receiver KJ Osborne’s hot start this season

Glendale, Ariz. – The start of KJ Osborne’s second NFL career included a big first Sunday.

Second game of the game.

First NFL touchdown.

“Obviously scoring a touchdown is something I’ve dreamed about my whole life in the NFL,” said second-year Vikings receiver Osborne, “so it was a great moment.”

In the blink of an eye, you missed it. The Cardinals did.

Lined up on the wide right, Osborne blew past Byron Murphy Jr.’s corner in the short zone and caught a pass from Kirk Cousins on the Cardinals’ 34-yard line without a challenge. Osbourne, chasing safety, beat Jalen Thompson to the goal line and scored from a lunge.

It garnered rave reviews, but the dream score stood.

Seventy-five yards in 44 seconds for a 7-0 lead on a play specially brought into the game by the Vikings.

“Just a great play design by Clint[offensive coordinator Kubiak],” said Cousins. “Great offensive play calls to build it up early.

“KJ did a tremendous job, not only running under it, but to finish the play. You don’t want to end up at the 1- or 2-yard line. Being able to finish is such an important quality of a receiver. Justin (Jefferson) does such a great job of it, and Adam (Thylen) does such a great job. KJ’s ability to find the end zone was a great effort.”

Osborne made five receptions for the team for 91 yards in the 34–33 loss to the Cardinals, giving them 12 catches for 167 yards in the first two games. He was active for nine matches last season but had no reception.

“I had a wheel drive, and throughout the week in practice — really, anytime we drive it — I try to get into alignment so I can come out on Justin’s heels,” Osborne said.

“And I just sprinted. I just executed the play. I saw he left me open, and Kirk bowled a great ball, and I was able to finish it.

When the Vikings go into their three-wide package, Osborne presents another weapon to complement Jefferson and Thielen, who also caught a touchdown pass on Sunday. Thielen entered the game in fifth place among NFL wide receivers with 33 touchdown receptions since 2017.

“He’s doing a great job,” Cousin said of Osborne. “We mix our personnel groups a lot … so it’s a constant rotation. KJ is doing what he did at OTA and through training camp. He continues to do this through weeks 1 and 2. Is.”

Osborne made the final two receptions of the game as the Vikings covered 58 yards in what could have been the winning field goal.

His 9-yard reception in the middle of the first down led the ball to the Cardinals’ 27-yard line, and his 8-yard catch on an even throw with 38 seconds remaining was a good first in 19 from where the Vikings played. Were ready to attempt a field goal to decide.

Osborne said he felt a bond with the cousins.

“I love it.” Osborne said. “Being able to be out there and communicate. He’s counting on me and we’re working on these big plays. These fourth-down plays, third-down plays, late in the game. I think That it’s really building our trust, and I look forward to building it.”
