Former Chico resident finds success in cider

CHICO — A former Chico resident is ramping up production on his cider business after a successful launch during a difficult time for new businesses.

Bex Pezzullo runs a cider business, Sincere Cider, in early 2020 after finding a passion for his Italian heritage and the creativity of fermenting wine.

Pezzullo’s interest in the wine process began while she was waiting tables at a Bay Area restaurant. While working at the restaurant, Pezzulo said the owner began teaching him about farm-to-table food and the process of making wine.

“I just fell in love with Italy and its culture,” Pezzulo said. “I’ve had to travel to Italy a few times and do harvest work and become an Italian wine specialist and have managed to have a short career as a sommelier.”

After having up and running the garage for the first time in years, Pezzullo said he saw an opportunity to put his knowledge to greater use.

“I ended up moving to Oakland, and when I was in Oakland, I had a garage,” Pezzulo said. “I turned it into a little baby winery, and then I got really mad that I could only do it once a year.”

After experiments with making his own beer, Pezulo decided that there was no use in making something he didn’t enjoy drinking.

“I don’t really like drinking beer,” Pezzulo said. “So I started having really fun with apple juice. I would travel up to the delta and get apples from the growers and bring them back to the garage, then all my friends would come over and we would process it and smoke some meat and Every quarter we would have our own crop.”

While doing various assignments in the corporate world, Pezzullo said that his interest always went back to making his own cider. Eventually, he decided to take the leap and do it full time.

“I jumped at the worst possible time to jump,” Pezzulo said. “I canned the first batch in the first week of March 2020 and I had a really good to market plan.”

Pezzullo said part of the plan was to make its cider available at Food Truck Festival organizer Off the Grid events, which could draw up to 10,000 people per event in the Bay Area, at San Francisco International and Oakland airports and local concert venues. The concessions with which he had made. Relationship.

“I had all these really great placements where it was always a new crowd coming in,” Puzolo said. “That was March 6, 2020. On March 13, I had nothing but aluminum cans and a warehouse full of apple juice.”

When the lockdown came, Pezzulo came to Chico to be with the family. She said that throughout it all, she hasn’t stopped trying to innovate new ways to market her cider.

“I’ve just started coming to the Bay Area and started doing deliveries, running routes and paying bartenders who were hired to make deliveries and developed a sales channel at the grassroots level,” Pezzulo said. “Eventually we got the attention from the distribution and I managed to partner with Wine Warehouse of California, the third largest distributor in the state.”

Now Pezzulo says that honest cider is available throughout northern California, through northern Nevada and southern California.

“I’m so glad I did that,” Pezzulo said. “If I was still in the event industry during COVID, I would have been fired – I wouldn’t have control over my fate.”

In addition to selling Honest Cider, a dried apple cider flavor, the company will also offer a fall-themed pomegranate flavor with hints or orange and cardamom.

In Chico, senior cider is available for purchase at Bevmo, the Chico Natural Foods Cooperative, New Earth Market, and Star Liquor.
