October 1 (WNN) — French prosecutors have identified a former police officer as the man behind several murders and rapes from 35 years ago.
Former officer François Verov, who also served as a ling, or military officer, left a letter this week acknowledging the crimes before killing himself.
Paris public prosecutor Laure Becuu said on Thursday that the DNA test “established a link between the genetic profile found at several crime sites and the deceased person.”
According to a statement from the prosecutor seen by CNN, Verov was behind five crimes between 1986 and 1994, including “rape, murders, attempted murder, armed robbery, misappropriation of title and kidnapping of 15-year-old minors and 15-year-olds.” False imprisonment of a child.”
The Guardian reported that the suspect evaded detection for decades, but cold case investigators recently determined that a gender was behind the crimes. He called for questioning hundreds of former genders, including Verov.
French media reported that Verov’s note stated that he was not in good condition at the time of the crimes, but did not indicate a motive.
The Guardian reported that Verov identified himself as a police officer for several women while carrying out the kidnapping and rape. Among those killed was an 11-year-old girl who he allegedly kidnapped from the lift of his building and raped her before leaving her body in the basement. Investigators also linked her to the assault and murder of a German au pair and her male owner in a Paris apartment.
Didier Seban, a lawyer for the victims’ families, said the family members suspected a police officer or lingam in the crimes because of the use of police techniques to subdue their victims.
“We’re going to ask the justice system to continue investigating, to find out if he had accomplices and to determine the number of victims,” he said. “Families should have answers.”
