Former Watergate prosecutor says Georgia investigation could “send Trump to jail”

In a recorded invitation from Trump to Georgia’s Secretary of State Brad Rafensperger ahead of the official confirmation of the 2020 vote, Trump told the election official to “find” the 11,780 votes needed to reverse his loss to Joe Biden in the country.

Ackermann, who was an assistant special prosecutor during the Watergate scandal that led to the resignation of former President Richard Nixon, said he believed the tape would be enough to lead to a possible conviction.

“If you are wondering which of the cases is currently going to send Donald Trump to prison, that is the case,” he said. “There is a really orderly three-year crime in Georgia that Donald Trump committed. Prosecutors like tape-recorded evidence because you can’t cross-examine it. “

“What is significant about these recordings is that when you put it in the context of all the evidence that the committee revealed on January 6 – when you put it together, Donald Trump has no defense in Georgia,” he added.

“If I had to invest my money in a prosecutor’s office that will advance here, and which will send Donald Trump to prison – that is Georgia.

Trump may have violated several federal laws in a conversation with Rafensperger. Georgian state law also considers it a crime to intentionally alter “any voter list, voter certificate, numbered voter list, ballot box, voting machine, direct recording equipment (DRE) or table machine” or persuading another person to commit such a serious act, for which is punishable by up to three years in prison.

Trump’s only potential defense would be to “somehow understand some ambiguity in the video, that he didn’t really mean what he said,” Ackermann noted, although he doesn’t think he will correct it.

“Position in context regarding the committee’s conclusion on January 6, I think they got the case beyond a reasonable doubt,” he said.

A selected House of Representatives commission investigating the January 6 attack on the US Capitol presented horrific evidence from thousands of hours of testimony and tens of thousands of pages of documents at this month’s hearings that paint a picture of Trump and his allies spreading untruths about the 2020 election. annul the results despite knowing that the accusations were incorrect.

Trump claimed that his conversation with Rafensperger was “PERFECT and appropriate”.
