France launches three probes into suspected Qatar spying

The prosecutor’s office on Tuesday confirmed a report by newspaper Le Monde that French justice had launched three preliminary investigations, one of them sued by former UEFA president Michel Platini following Sunday Times revelations in November Was.

The newspaper said Platini, a former French football star who later became a sports manager, was questioned as a witness in an investigation on 4 January and a source close to the case confirmed to AFP.

The investigation, opened in November for “an attack on an automated data system” and “violation of the confidentiality of correspondence”, is being carried out by a unit specializing in computer crimes, the prosecutor’s office explained.

As revealed by the British newspaper Sunday Times, Michel Platini was spied on in May 2019, shortly before his provisional arrest (in June of that year) on suspicion of corruption in the process of awarding the World Cup to Qatar, for which There was a case, at the moment, he has not been charged.

A second investigation was also launched in November following a complaint lodged by French senator Nathalie Goulet, who told AFP she received a phone call from a “gentleman who introduced himself as an investigator but did not identify himself”. without” and he knew the password. to his gmail mail.

The MP linked the hacking to his work on radical Islam and his votes against conventions signed by France and Qatar, one of them a cooperation agreement on security during the World Cup.

The third investigation was initiated as a result of a lawsuit filed by the information site Mediapart and its journalist Yann Filippin, author of several investigations on Qatar.

Mediapart reported that the Philippine has been the victim of various scam attempts on the Internet since January 2020 by sending fake emails.

According to a Sunday Times investigation, fifty celebrities, including journalists and lawyers, fell victim to computer attacks designed to protect Qatar’s reputation.
