Within the framework of the Under-20 World Cup being held in Costa Rica, the French national team defeated their Canadian pair 3–1 and thus recovered from the loss on debut.
The match began very similarly, with conditions for both teams, Grant had two clear options to open the scoring in favor of Canada, but the American 9 was not on its best day and failed to open the scoring. Hertre also had some position in his feet in France, however, the French striker lacked accuracy when it came to the finish.
Canada played well against France till the first half of the opening leg, since then it was all about the Europeans.
First Holtzel and later Folquet attempted for France with long-range shots that were only wide, France began to show a superiority that would be visible for the rest of the match. France’s poor goal in the final minutes of the first half and figures from Karpenko (Canadian goalkeeper) took the match 0–0 at the break.
In the second half, the story was different, five minutes were enough for Foulquet to go into a free kick masterfully executed by Hertre and score 1–0 with France getting their first gap in the match.
Ten minutes later, Folquet again got a cross, this time down from the right. He scored 2-0 before the passive gaze of the Canadian defence, giving Les Blais even more peace of mind.
After the second French goal, the match entered a rut that ended with only France third. Karpenko’s big mistake (by then, match figures) and French striker Mbakam only had to push him into the net.
Over time, Canada reached a discount through Olivia Smith. A discount that made it necessary to pull out the calculator and calculate, in relation to which the selected was in second place in the table. After the match and with the final result unchanged, France were placed second which would give them a classification in case of a draw on the final day against South Korea. Conversely, Asian players would only work for a win to reach the second round of the tournament.
