Freedom defeats Strongest; advanced as 1st in Libertadores

BOGOTÁ ( Associated Press) — Libertad recovered from two consecutive losses and thrashed The Strongest 4-1 on Thursday to secure first place in Group B and reach the round of 16 of the Copa Libertadores.

The “Gumarelo”, who had just fallen on his visits to Caracas and Athletico Paranaense, confirmed his strength as a local at the Defensores del Chaco stadium with goals from Lorenzo Melgarejo at 25 minutes, two from William Mendieta, at 55 from a penalty and at 90, as well as an own goal by Adrián Jusino at 70.

Luciano Ursino (41) scored the goal for the Bolivian team, which ended with one less player after Juan Pablo Aponte was sent off for a double warning (66).

Despite the win, the “Tiger” finished in third place and won the pass to the Copa Sudamericana.

The second place in the area was in the hands of Athletico Paranaense, who beat Caracas 5-1.

Doubles by Pablo (19 and 22) and Christian (45+1 and 70) and another by Pedro Rocha (75) gave Furacão the three points, which finished with 10 points, the same as Libertad, but with a worse goal difference (+2 for +1).
