Freeman HR Leads Emotional Returns, Dodgers Beat Reds

CINCINNATI ( Associated Press) — Freddie Freeman rode three runs ahead of what is sure to be an emotional weekend ahead of Clayton Kershaw and the Los Angeles Dodgers over the Cincinnati Reds 10-5 on Thursday to win the Series of the Seasons .

Cody Bellinger, Max Munsey, Will Smith and Justin Turner also featured for the NL West-leading Dodgers, who beat the Reds 52-18 to win all seven of their games this year.

Now the Dodgers are heading to Atlanta, where Freeman has long been the face of the franchise and helped the Braves win the World Series last year. He then became a free agent and signed a six-year, $162 million contract with the Dodgers.

Cincinnati has lost seven in a row and is the NL’s worst 23-46.

Kershaw (5-1) allowed one run and seven hits in six innings. He struck out seven, leaving after 80 pitches and dropping his ERA to an even 2.00.

Reds rookie Hunter Green (3-8) – despite hitting 100 mph with his fastball at least five times early in the game – had six runs and nine hits, including three homers, in five innings.

Freeman hit a towering homer with two runs to center field in the third. Bellinger’s double drive in the fourth made it 5-0. Freeman added an RBI single in the eighth.

Tommy Pham hit a three-run homer and the Reds hit four in the seventh inning off reliever Phil Bickford.

Dodgers: Moved INF Edwin Rios (right hamstring strain) to 60 day injury list.

Reds: LHP Nick Lodolo (rear) was scheduled to start rehab Thursday night at Triple A-Louisville. … RHP Justin Dunn (shoulder) is expected to enter rehab this weekend at High A-Dayton. …FROM Tyler Naquin (ATV) has been running around the bases with no problems, but there is still no timetable for his return.

Dodgers: Head to Atlanta for a three-game streak. Ian Anderson (6-3, 4-35 ERA) is the Braves’ scheduled starter against southpaw Julio Urias (4-6, 2.56). Anderson allowed no runs and three hits and struck out six of 6 2/3 innings in a Cubs win on Sunday. Urias gave up with just a run and two punches out of six in a victory over the Guardians on Saturday.

Reds: Rookie right-hander Graham Ashcraft (3-1, 3.51 ERA) scheduled starter against San Francisco right-hander Alex Cobb in the opening weekend series against the Giants. Ashcraft had five runs and eight hits in five innings in the Reds’ loss to the Brewers last Saturday. Cobb threw four innings against the Pirates on Sunday, allowing two runs and four no-decision hits.
