French presidential contender Zemmour says COVID fears are exaggerated

PARIS – Eric Zemmour, a far-right French political commentator and likely presidential candidate, said on Monday that fears over the new coronavirus were exaggerated.

Zemmur’s position contrasts with that of governments across Europe, which are re-imposing travel restrictions to curb the fifth wave of the pandemic, while Austria went into full isolation on Monday. More details.

“We need to get this epidemic back in the right proportions. We played a lot on people’s fears. We went too far and we went too far from the start, ”Zemmour told France Info radio.

French opinion polls show Zemmour is challenging rival far-right politician Marine Le Pen of the Unification Nationals party for second place and thus a place in the second round of elections next year against poll leader and incumbent President Emmanuel Macron. Polls make Macron the likely winner in the second round.

He also said he ultimately intends to abandon the COVID medical passport currently in use in France, which is used to confirm vaccination status when entering bars, restaurants, museums and sports facilities.

Zemmour spent last weekend in London courting numerous French expats from the city. He is expected to confirm his candidacy for the presidency on December 7.
