Frozen tundra doesn’t stop the Faithful: 49ers have rich history of playing in cold weather

It looks like the 49ers will get another taste of how cold Green Bay can get in the winter when they kick off Saturday night at Lambo Field.

Current forecasts show that Saturday night’s weather in Wisconsin is expected to be in the single digits for most of the game, with 5 to 10 mph winds and a chance of about 10 percent rain. It’s unlikely that Green Bay will be as cold as the Ice Bowl (temperature -15, cold winds around -46 according to new National Weather Service measurements) in Green Bay, but you probably won’t find anyone in shorts.

Of course, things can change due to weather conditions, but it’s clear that this will be one of the coldest games in the history of the San Francisco 49ers – even if it’s not unusual for the Packers, who played at least half a dozen singles games. digit or negative temperature before. But there’s a funny thing about Bay Area residents accustomed to our moderate weather year-round: no matter when in 49ers history they ventured north to play in the cold, they found a way to emerge victorious, even if a bit frozen.

Here’s a retrospective of the three coldest (and one extra) playoff games in 49ers history (year being the NFL season in which the game was played):

1970 NFC Divisional Round: 49ers 17, Vikings 14 in Bloomington, MN

The opening of the “Game of the Week” video, which is still on YouTube, immediately blew the weather. “In Minnesota, this day was known as the perfect day for football: clear, crisp and a pleasant 8 degrees above zero. What the doctor did not prescribe to the enemy of the Vikings from the fragrant San Francisco Bay. In the first year after the NFL-AFL merged into two conferences and three divisions, they were the top two teams in the NFC, but the playoffs at that time were a foregone conclusion, so the 10-3-1 49ers had to leave. to the Vikings 12-2, while the Cowboys took on the Lions, both with 10-4 records. The weather certainly had an effect on each team’s tackle, with a total of eight fumbles. But quarterback John Brody was able to find some air success even in the cold, completing 16 of 32 passes for 201 yards and touchdowns. He also scored a touchdown with 1:20 left to push the 49ers ahead 17–7. The Vikings went down as fast as they could and scored a touchdown, but with one second left to go sent the underdog Dick Nolan 49ers back to San Francisco with the win. But the NFC Championship would be the first of three playoff losses to the Cowboys in the 1970s, a 17–10 loss in the 49ers’ final game at Kezar Stadium.

1981 Super Bowl XVI*: 49ers 26, Bengals 21 in Pontiac, Michigan

So we’re cheating a little, since the real game for the 49ers’ first Super Bowl win was inside the Pontiac Silverdome. But the weather outside of the stadium was absolutely terrible and even affected the 49ers, which is why we’re including it here. The temperature outside was around +13 but with freezing rain and cold winds around -21 on snowy ground. Getting to the Silverdome was a nightmare, and the unexpected arrival of Vice President George W. Bush only made matters worse. In fact, the 49ers bus carrying head coach Bill Walsh, quarterback Joe Montana and others got stuck in traffic and didn’t arrive until 90 minutes before kickoff. But, as Montana recently detailed in his Peacock series, Walsh didn’t lose his head, joking that the 49ers were already in the lead thanks to team members scoring touchdowns. Once they got there and took to the field, the weather and the delay in arrival didn’t seem to matter as San Francisco took a 20-0 lead to hold onto their first Super Bowl title.

1988 NFC Championship: 49ers 28, Bears 3 in Chicago
