‘Full Game’: Record-breaking TE Ravens Mark Andrews smashes all 11 catches against the Browns

The ad campaign kicked off early last season thanks to Lamar Jackson.

“We’ve got the top two, not the two — the league is on the edge right now,” quarterback Voronov said in September 2020. And again in December: “Two are the best, not two.”

This week is arguably easier than ever to see Mark Andrews as a tight top two in the NFL and possibly number 1 overall. He entered the fifteenth week as the leader in the number of foster homes. In the Pro Football Focus rankings, he is only behind San Francisco 49ers star George Kittle. And he’s hitting 11 traps on 11 targets on Sunday’s loss to the Crows to the Cleveland Browns, giving Andrews a franchise record in one season for yards on tight end (926 yards).

“He’s definitely one of the best in the league,” Ravens mentor Bobby Engram said Thursday. “There will always be debates – one, two or three? I’m biased, so I think he’s # 1. ”

Sunday master class is a compelling argument. Losing 24-22 on the road, Andrews became the first player in Ravens history to finish with at least 10 receptions and catch 100% of his goals in one game. He also received high marks from Ingram for the block, which helped the Ravens averaged over 5 yards per carry despite Jackson’s early departure (ankle sprain).

“I feel like he played the whole game,” Engram said, but perhaps more revealing was the total trust the Ravens placed in their fourth-year star. Andrews received what Engram calls “creative freedom” as a recipient. He has long had enough quickness to separate from the midfielders and physical strength so as not to pay attention to the defenders and full-backs. In this attack, the Ravens have coaches and quarterbacks trusting him to read his clues – pre-tackle charts, mid-game leverage, heads-up matches – and open.

This can sometimes mean using the same route concept to discover three different catches. This is what happened on Sunday. On Thursday, Andrews broke all tricks, big and small, with The Baltimore Sun.

First quarter

Catch # 1: Lining up as blockers in second and eighth place, Andrews punched through the defensive end of Jadewon the Clown, slowing his pass before releasing him to the left where Jackson found him. He was grabbed behind the scrum with a one-yard loss.

“When you chip and release, it’s a huge job,” Andrews said. “Your tackles rely on the fact that you hit the ball in a certain way, get aggressive and be able to move a little, and then, once you get the job done, that’s the most important thing. Obviously there are routes in this defense, and you want to have time for those longer routes and then be able to get out and get your quarterback out and hopefully get around the defense, turn the field around and get some yards. ”

Second quarter

Catch # 2: In second and 15th place, the Ravens described Andrews as a tight screen, whose pass-blocking position did not deceive defender Miles Garrett. When Jackson tried to run away from inside midfielder Jeremy Owusu-Koramoa – Jackson sprained his ankle during the game – Andrews pulled away from Garrett, made a one-handed catch and scored 5 yards.

“Once I saw that [Garrett] not going to fully enter the field, which he usually does – he made a smart game – I got to the sideline as fast as I could, ”said Andrews. “Lamar threw a great ball, and I just tilted him towards me and took to the field.”

Catch # 3: In second and third, in a rush, Andrews ran out of the right slot – where he dealt most of his injuries on Sunday – against the smaller Owusu-Koramoa, using his size to initiate contact and make room for a 4-yard catch.

“His job is to bend flat curls, so for me as a guy with a big body type, I’m going to push on him, I’m going to bend over and pull out at an angle where ‘Snoop’ [backup quarterback Tyler Huntley] has an easy and safe throw, ”Andrews said.

Third quarter

Catch # 4: Lining up against Owusu-Koramoa, Andrews mimicked the breakout route – the one he used to free himself for his third trick – before swerving his route back inward, where he settled on an open patch of grass and fell forward. 10-yard extension to 2nd and 6th.

“I can break free, I can break in,” Andrews said. “I felt that as I kind of leaned outward, I felt his impulse go away, and so so that I could find this space inside, I knew that I had just turned it inward. These are the things that when you start running 8, 10 and 5 yards, you start to feel what the defense is doing. You will not receive the same thing all the time, but you can start guessing, feeling and anticipating something. And this is one of those that are here. ”

Catch # 5: Andrews’ biggest game, the 32-yard run-up catch, which Harbaugh called “pretty monstrous,” came shortly after Huntley told Huntley that it had a similar opening at the end of the second quarter. This time, as Andrews cleverly freed himself from full-back Troy Hill at a chicken-wing junction, Huntley hit him in stride and watched him rumble. Four Browns defenders tried to knock Andrews down before he carried them out of bounds.

“I was working on YAC,” he said. “The yards after the catch are important. This is what helps the whole team. When you act out such a piece, everyone is ready to go. I try to help as much as I can, and when I get the ball, the only thing in my head is to try to get to the end zone. … Whenever you can drag the guys around and not fall to the ground, I think that speaks to what you are about. ”

Catch # 6: In third and 22nd positions, when the Ravens needed a few easy yards to hit goal kicker Justin Tucker, Andrews caught a pass from the line-up. His 8-yard win brought the Ravens to Cleveland’s 37-yard line, and Tucker nailed 55 in the next game.

“I love catching the ball, running away, running over people and traveling long distances,” Andrews said. “But I also love to block these guys. I love to block “Quise” [Marquise “Hollywood” Brown], ‘Duv’ [Devin Duvernay], ‘Pro’ [James Proche] – anyone, all these guys – because I know how explosive they are. They are much more explosive than me. So if I know I can do a big block and I can drive a guy 5, 10, 15 yards, especially some of those smaller guys, and just kick, they’ll make me right, they’re going to make a big game. And that’s probably one of the nicest things you can do. ”

Fourth quarter

Catch # 7: On 4th and 11th, Andrews went undetected right in the numbers after Cleveland failed a pass defense on a pre-tackle. But before he could even turn to present himself as a target, Huntley turned on. Andrews quickly adjusted to the ball that got him onto the pitch and he fell forward, gaining a 13-yard lead.

“I think Snoop learned a lot,” he said. “This playful appeal is one of those things where it is always preached:“ Eyes ”. If you feel like you are open, give him eyes and his gaze was accurate. He was ready immediately. I think he learns a lot. I think he learned a lot from Lamar. I think he achieves this without delay. He plays really, really well. And making such a ball is not easy. ”

Catch # 8: Another example of Andrews’ freedom: with little space underneath and a patch of unmarked grass ahead, Andrews abandoned the fast track. Instead, he continued along the seam, raising his hand and watching Huntley make a 20-yard pass between shallow and deep defenders.

“I just chose an upright position,” Andrews said. “I knew there was no throw here. [in the flat]… I don’t do this all the time. I felt it. I felt it, and obviously Snoop felt it too, threw a great ball, put it there. I knew there was a pocket [of space] there, and usually in a play like this, I wouldn’t do it, I just ran my route. But I ran it a couple of times and knew there was something there. ”

Catch # 9: In the fourth and first, in the remaining three minutes, Andrews didn’t need much. He ran a fast passing route against the safety of Grant Delpit, who guarded the first fall marker and then secured a shot from Huntley on the run. His only regret for the 2 yard haul? Do not go outside the field.

“Usually teams recruit something where it will be a person. [coverage] somehow, ”he said. “So this call to play was perfect. He just let me crash into the apartment, walk through the courtyard and get up. ”

Catch # 10: On the first and a goal from 8 Cleveland, Andrews wanted to get to his golden spot at the back of the end zone. So he deviated from one falling defender, inside midfielder Malcolm Smith, and split two deep Browns safes that were stretched out by the Ravens’ line-up. In a one-step fall, Huntley gave Andrews enough time to clear the coverage area and enough room to get both feet overboard for an easy landing.

“Again, Snoop threw a great ball to the right in this good area,” Andrews said. “It is the matter of time. Everything happens quickly in the red zone, so for us it must be on the same page, we must do everything right. ”

Catch # 11: In third and 20th on the Ravens main gear, Andrews interrupted the vertical route and crossed the middle, gaining 14 yards, again using his size to create space and a glimmer of hope.

“I ran very hard across the field and realized that [Smith] wasn’t going to let me get around him, [so I] got hit by it, ”he said. “Snoop shot and it was a great success. This gave us the chance to convert a quarter down. ”

They could not, leaving Andrews to reckon with everything that he did not. There wasn’t much. On Thursday he was asked what he got out of the game with such ups and downs.

“Most importantly, I would like us to win this game,” Andrews said. “I think we fought to the very end. I think everything – offense, defense, special teams – we all fought. And I think all games are different, you know? Something happens – maybe the ball breaks – but it was a special game. I thought I played well. I wish we won. I think it would be better that way. ”
