Jets of star-forming gas dripping from the disk of the “jellyfish” galaxy JW100 as tight patches of fresh paint were formed by a pressure-pulling process called drag and captured by the Hubble telescope.
The resemblance of the dangling arms of the astronomers led JW100 to be referred to as a “jellyfish” galaxy.
It is located more than 800 million light-years away in the constellation Pegasus, and appears at the lower right of the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope image.
How is the “jellyfish” galaxy formed?
They pull the pressure off when the galaxies encounter the diffuse gas that has invaded the clusters.
When they pass through the thin gas, it acts like a giant, blowing gas and dust out of the galaxy, and creates a wide stream thanks to JW100.
The bright ellipticals in the image are other galaxies in the cluster that hosts JW100, NASA reported.
At the top of the image are two blobs surrounded by a remarkably bright space of diffused light.
This is the nucleus of IC 5338, the brightest elliptical galaxy in the cluster, with an extended halo, a type of galaxy called cD.
These probably grow by consuming smaller galaxies, so it is not unusual for them to have multiple nuclei, as they can be absorbed for a long time.
The bright points of light that pierce the outer edges of the galaxy are rich globular star clusters.
This observation was made possible by the capabilities of the Hubble Field Telescope III.
The data is part of a series of observations to explore star formation in key objects in outer space.
These keys represent star formation under extreme conditions and help astronomers better understand the process of star formation in other parts of the universe and in “jellyfish” galaxies.
