Galen settles after wild start, d-back tops Reds 7-4

PHOENIX ( Associated Press) – Zac Gallen made seven effective innings despite an opening bout of wildness, and the Arizona Diamondbacks used a four-run eighth inning to lead the Cincinnati Reds 7-4 on Wednesday.

Geraldo Perdomo hit a two-run homer for the Diamondbacks, who avoided a sweep after the Reds took the first two games of the series.

Arizona went on to remain on David Peralta’s lone RBI single against Art Warren (2-3). Pavin Smith moved to Keitel Marte with a fielder’s pick, and Perdomo’s RBI single lifted the Diamondbacks to a 6-3 lead. Smith scored on a ball from River San Martin.

Brandon Drury hit his 13th homer for Cincinnati, who won three in a row. Luis Castillo played seven innings of a four-hit ball.

Galen settled after a brutal start. The right-handed batsman struck four of his first eight batsmen, two in the first and two in the second.

The Reds pushed two in the second when Galen had an error throwing in a pickoff attempt and Jonathan India hit a run-scoring double in the left field corner.

Four hit batsmen set Diamondbacks franchise record. According to Elias, Oscar Jones of Brooklyn hit five batsmen in a game in 1903, just shy of one of the modern-day records.

The Diamondbacks responded in their half of the second. Doubles by Peralta and Alec Thomas scored the team’s first, and Perdomo made it 3–2 when he connected for his second homer on a first-pitch fastball.

Three consecutive good defensive plays helped Gallen into the bottom of fifth. Thomas raced a smash by Aramis Garcia on the left-center warning track, and Josh Rojas turned in two excellent plays in a row.

India hit a hard grounder in Rojas’ backhand that he fielded cleanly and then threw first. Then the third baseman made a diving catch on the sinking ship by Drury.

Gallen retired his last 16 batsmen. He scored five runs and allowed just two hits without running a batsman.

Noe Ramirez (2-1) surrendered a homer tying Dury with two outs in the eighth, ending Gallen’s chance of victory.
