Garland signs a 5-year extension with the Cavaliers

CLEVELAND ( Associated Press) — Darius Garland’s rapid rise to the NBA elite has been completed.

The Cleveland star point guard agreed a $193 million, five-year contract extension on Saturday, his Clutch Sports agent Rich Paul told the Associated Press.

Garland’s contract is the largest in the team’s history and secures him a player whom the Cavs believe can take him back to the top spot.

Fifth in the 2019 draft, Garland quickly became one of the best point guards in the game. Last season, he averaged 21.7 points and 8.6 assists in 68 games. The Cavs won 22 more games than the previous season.

Garland, 22, has improved his stats each season, but more importantly, he has grown into a leader in the Cleveland team that missed the playoffs last season. He is one of the key pieces of the team along with star center Jarrett Allen and forward Evan Mobley.

Garland agreed to a similar deal as another young elite guard. Ja Morant of the Memphis Grizzlies signed a few days earlier at the start of the league’s off-season business.

Garland’s expansion begins in the 2023–24 season, and for now he will earn $33 million in the first year and increase to $44 million in 2027–28.

If he joins an NBA team—that is, if he is chosen from among the top six point guards in the league, unless the league changes its voting structure—the number increases from “max” to “supermax”. Is.

In that case, it would earn $40 million in 2023-24 and increase to about $53 million in 2027-28.
