Blind spot defense for Zach Wilson may not play against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday at Hard Rock Stadium.
Zach Wilson’s blind side may be slightly less defended Sunday in Miami.
Left tackle George Funt suffered a knee injury and, according to Robert Saleh, “on the fence” to play against the Dolphins. Reserve tackle Conor McDermott will replace Fanta if he can’t leave. McDermott played just seven shots in 2021.
Fant did not train this week and did not participate on Friday.
It is worth mentioning: under Saleh, if a Jets player did not train for a week, he was inactive on a game day.
This is true for CJ Mosley versus the Patriots in Week 7, Corey Davis versus the Bengals, Colts and Texans, Elijah Moore and Michael Carter II versus the Saints last week, Keelan Cole versus the Panthers and Sheldon Rankins versus the Eagles.
So it’s fair to expect Fant not to play.
If Fant doesn’t get dressed, it will be a devastating blow to the offensive line. His outstanding blocking helped the unit, which performed well after the first problems with defending the passage.
Funt started the season with a right tack and was switched to left at the opening of the season against the Panthers when Mehi Beckton suffered a knee injury in the third quarter. Fant stepped in and provided stability. According to Pro Football Focus, he is allowed 18 taps (15th most tackles) and only one bag (second-lowest tackles).
If the Jets don’t start attacking the Dolphins, it will create problems for Wilson. According to Next Gen Stats statistics, the Dolphins pounced on defenders 39% of the time they were thrown back.
QB have an 84 passing rating and make 57% of their passes when thrown against their blitz. Miami will also have an all-out blitz cover, as it leads the NFL 13% of the time, according to the PFF. They also have a burgeoning pass, Jalan Phillips, who has seven sacks in his last five games. Defensive end Emmanuel Ogbach has six points a year.
The Dolphins managed to disguise their blitz, bewildering the quarterback.
“I think one of their most important things is becoming a quarterback, the all-out pressure when you think you have to be in perfect shape,” Wilson said. “And then you try to do a lot of different things to get the right look, and then they do something else.”
Having Fant helps in communication; it’s not just about just blocking your boyfriends one-on-one. A cohesive unit is good for shifting responsibility to an extra striker when teams try to outwit the offensive line and get to QB.
The Jets brought Michael Carter back on track after suffering an ankle injury in a Week 11 game with the Dolphins. He will serve as the spark for the intense attack, which has averaged 16 points and 267 yards per game in the last three games.
Carter’s double threat was missed. He leads the team (430) and is sixth in receiving yards (308), placing him first in the scrum. Saleh expects Carter to play an “important role” in the fight against the Dolphins.
“He is exactly what you would expect from a young guy. We’re talking about early backing, obviously, but he’s picked as the pick in the fourth round, he has ups and downs during training camps, there are some bursts, he starts a little slower throughout the season, ”Saleh said. “But it keeps getting better and better and better, and every time he touches the ball, he does something to it to the point where you can’t deny him the ball. An exciting comeback for him, obviously four games for him to end the season strong. ”
Bringing back Carter gives Wilson another weapon to kick the ball and throw as Moore and Davis won’t be available. If Carter manages to be successful at running, it will ease the pressure on Wilson.
