Georgia: Two jawans killed in tree fall

Fort Benning, Ga. ( Associated Press) – The US military on Thursday identified two soldiers who were killed by a tree fell during training in the mountains of northern Georgia.

Staff Sergeant George Taber and Second Lieutenant Evan Fitzgibbon died Tuesday when they collided with a fallen tree during a “weather-induced break in training,” Army officials at Fort Benning said in a statement. Three other soldiers were injured and treated at the hospital.

The fatal incident occurred at Mount Jonah, about 70 miles (112 kilometers) northeast of Atlanta, where soldiers were attending the Army’s harsh ranger school. The two-month course tests soldiers’ abilities to overcome fatigue, hunger and stress in harsh environments.

“We are all deeply saddened by the loss of these two outstanding soldiers and extend our deepest condolences to their families,” Major General Curtis A Buzzard, commanding general of Fort Benning and its Maneuver Center of Excellence, said in a statement. “They are in our thoughts and prayers”.

The military said Taber was a medical sergeant assigned to the 7th Special Forces Group at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida. He had joined the army in 2017.

Fitzgibbon was assigned to a training unit at Fort Benning. He was commissioned last year after graduating from the United States Military Academy at West Point.

This was the second fatality involving Georgia-based troops in the past month. In late July, Sergeant First Class Michael D. Clark was killed by lightning at Fort Gordon near Augusta. Nine other soldiers were injured in the incident.
