Gerrit Cole takes no-hitter in the eighth inning, Yankees rally for 4-2 win over Ray

ST. SAINT PETERSBURG. In the eighth round, Gerrit Cole broke his bet on no hits, and Clay Holmes finally gave up. It didn’t matter. Watching their bullpen lose lead for the second day in a row, the Yankees simply rallied in the top of the ninth with a 4-2 victory over the Rays at Tropicana Field.

This is the 13th time this season that the Yankees (50-17) have responded with a win after a loss. They have only lost three games in a row this season and have not had a losing streak of more than three games. The Raises (36-31) have lost four in a row to the Yankees and six of their last seven games. The Yankees improved to 25-11 against the American East League and became the first team in baseball to score 50 wins.

Josh Donaldson scored with one strikeout from Jason Adam and scored when Manuel Margo was injured when Aaron Hicks sent the ball into the wall in right field. Margo crashed into a wall and had to be taken away, apparently injuring her knee. Hicks scored on Trevino’s sacrificial fly.

Isaac Paredes set fire to a ground ball in the middle to break Cole’s no-hit bid for no-outs in the eighth round.

After Cole left, Holmes gave up a one-out double to pinch striker Francisco Mejia and allowed Paredes to hit the ball to Yandy Diaz, who returned to the mound. This was only the second legacy runner of 13 that Holmes allowed to score this season. Holmes saw the first goal scored against him since April 8, when Manuel Margot beat the short infield. His franchise-record streak was recorded of 31 consecutive scoreless innings and 29 games.

So, Cole had nothing to show for an amazing night. The $324 million Yankee man was charged with one run on one hit in 7.1 innings. He walked three and struck out 12.

Cole gave up the first two batters he faced, but then his nemesis G-Man Choi worked out a six-way walk. In response, he eliminated Randy Arozarena to finish the pitch and then eliminated the next five hitters he faced. He again had to work out of stretch in the fifth when he lost to Brett Phillips, who was an emergency replacement for the injured Kevin Kiermeier. After receiving a flyball from Isaac Paredes, he passed Josh Lowe. Cole struck out catcher Rene Pinto to get himself out of the predicament.

Earlier this month, the 31-year-old flirted with the perfect game. Cole took a no-hitter in the seventh inning against the Tigers on June 3. Jonathan Shoop ruined Cole’s perfect evening with two strikeouts in the seventh. Shoop landed in the middle just behind the glove of diving second baseman DJ LeMahieu. It came after Jameson Talon had brought a no-hitter into the eighth inning the night before. It was the fourth time this season that a Yankee starter made a no-hit bet in the sixth inning or later.

His last start was also against the Rays, back in the Bronx. Cole threw six scoreless, striking out seven and a walking one. In three starts against the Rays this season, Cole allowed a 19.2-inning earned streak. Cole has hit at least 10 batters in his last six starts at Tropicana Field, the longest stretch for a guest pitcher at that stadium.

This was not the only dominant performance on Trop Monday night. Shane McClanahan spent most of the night unbalancing the Yankees’ attack.

Anthony Rizzo hit his first home run in his first at-bat, his fourth home run in the last five games. It was Rizzo’s first hit from the young left-hander Rays after having gone 0-for-8 with two strikeouts against him in previous encounters. He also singled it out in the sixth.

It was all the Yankees got against McClanahan, who allowed one run in six innings of work. He walked one and struck out eight. The Yankees got four hits from him.

The Yankees got their second run off Ryan Thompson in the seventh. Gleyber Torres doubled up to dribble and then scored when Choi threw a shot at a Jose Trevino ground ball.
