Getz’s ex-girlfriend testifies before grand jury investigating Florida congressman

The development is the latest sign that the long-running investigation into Getz is active. A source familiar with the matter previously told CNN that the ex-girlfriend would appear before the grand jury.

CNN sees a woman arriving at a federal courtroom in Orlando, Florida, with her attorney on Wednesday. He has since finished his testimony in the Getz case and left the courthouse.

His lawyer, Timothy Jensen, briefly addressed reporters gathered outside the courthouse. “All I can say is that CNN has seen me and my client come and I can confirm that I am here, but I can’t comment,” he said.

The woman, a former Capitol Hill employee, has been linked to Getz in the summer of 2017. Investigators are interested in that time period because that’s when the congressman is accused of having sexual contact with another woman, who was 17. Years old at that time.

The ex-girlfriend may also be integral to officers investigating potential obstruction of justice as the investigation into Getz’s conduct heats up. CNN has reported that investigators are aware of discussions Gaetz and a colleague had about speaking to him in October 2020.

Legal experts say the ex-girlfriend’s testimony is a necessary step prosecutors will take before charging Getz, and it signals that federal prosecutors may be closer to impeaching Congress. Several people familiar with the case have told CNN that a grand jury — a group of ordinary people who hear evidence presented by prosecutors behind closed doors about a possible crime — in connection with the Getz investigation, George C. Young is meeting in the Federal Annex Courthouse. ,

A Justice Department spokesman declined to comment.

Getz has denied any wrongdoing and has not been charged with a crime.

Gaetz’s lawyers said in a statement Wednesday that they saw “no credible basis” for the allegation against Gaetz and said they were “steadfast in our commitment to challenging any allegation with facts and law.”
