A minor who was kidnapped by her own mother has been found thanks to a Netflix series that featured the unsolved case in one of its chapters.
The series “Unsolved Mysteries”, which portrays “real cases of disappearances, shocking murders and paranormal encounters”, followed in its last season with the case of Kayla Unbehoun, in which a minor was murdered. She was lost when she was kidnapped. In custody in 2017, when she was 9 years old.
The minor was found in North Carolina after a store owner recognized her while watching an episode of the Netflix series. He immediately contacted the Asheville police to alert them of the situation.
The girl, identified as Kayla Anbehoun, was found 965 km from the home of her father, Ryan Iserka, in the state of Illinois, which authorities have legally held in custody of the minor since 2017.
Her father did not stop searching for her for more than five years and even though he did not know her whereabouts, he filed a complaint against the mother.
“We are pleased to report that the girl is in good health and in a good mood since being reunited with her father,” local police chief Jerry Krawczyk said in a statement.
Similarly, the production of the series celebrated that the matter was resolved due to the streaming platform.
She said on her social media, “Kayla Unbehoun, who was abducted in 2017 by her non-custodial mother, Heather, has been found safe.”
“A store owner in North Carolina recognized Kayla, who is now 15, from a listing on Netflix Volume 3, Episode 9 “Abducted by a Parent,” he said.
Her mother, Heather Unbehoun, was arrested for kidnapping her own daughter in order to prevent her from permanently living with her father.
