Giuliani, Graham summoned in Trump election probe

ATLANTA ( Associated Press) – Georgia prosecutor U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani and others investigating the conduct of former President Donald Trump and their aides after the 2020 election were forced to testify before a special grand jury trying to do.

Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis filed the petition Tuesday with the judge overseeing the special grand jury. Fulton County Superior Court Judge Robert McBurney signed a “certificate of physical witness” for Graham, Giuliani and others, saying they were deemed necessary for the investigation.

Representatives for Giuliani and Graham did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Willis also filed petitions for five other potential witnesses.

A special grand jury is investigating whether Trump and others tried to illegally influence the 2020 presidential election in Georgia. Trump insisted that the election was plagiarized, despite the fact that several federal and local officials, the courts, and Trump’s own attorney general have said there was no evidence of fraud he had alleged.

The investigation has been going on since the beginning of last year. Willis took this unusual step of requesting a special grand jury to assist him. He noted in a letter to the chief justice at the time that the special grand jury would be able to issue summons to those who have otherwise refused to cooperate.

Willis has confirmed that his team is investigating a January 2021 phone call in which Trump implored Georgia Secretary of State Brad Riffensperger to “find” the votes needed to win the state. She has also said that the team is considering the November 2020 phone call between Graham and Raffensperger, the US Attorney’s sudden resignation in Atlanta on January 4, 2021, and comments made during December 2020, of the Georgia Legislative Committee on Elections. the hearing.

It’s not clear what charges Willis could level against Trump or anyone else. In a letter sent to top state officials last year, she said she was looking into “potential breaches of Georgia law prohibiting solicitation of election fraud, making false statements to state and local government bodies, conspiracy , racketeering, violation of oath of office and any involvement in violence or threats related to election administration.”
