GoFundMe cancels fundraiser to raise $ 5 million for Waukesha suspect Darrell Brooks

GoFundMe canceled a fundraiser for Darrell Brooks, an alleged SUV driver who ran over dozens of people, killing six, during the Christmas parade in Waukesha, Wisconsin last Sunday.

Brooks, 39, was originally charged with five counts of premeditated murder, and his bail was set at $ 5 million by Waukesh Court Commissioner Kevin Costello.

GoFundMe was created for Brooks to raise money for his collateral, and a screenshot of the crowdfunding page was obtained by the Daily Mail.

The GoFundMe page was originally hosted by someone who introduced himself as James Norton of Waukesha.

It read: “Hello everyone. On November 21, 2021, our dear friend Darrell Brooks was arrested for allegedly driving his car in the parade, as someone who knows Darrell personally, I can tell you that he would NEVER do that and I know he innocent of what was charged against him. with.”

“Obviously the media is not telling us something else and I’m trying to raise bail so Darrell can be released and tell his truth to his side of the story in this tragic situation where another black man ends up behind bars in a purely political and racist court. “, – the message says.

Norton added that “there is no justification for this continued treatment of black Americans by prosecutors across the country” and that “everyone should be presumed innocent until proven guilty,” before urging Brooks “to treat him like to anyone else in the country. ” this country will receive treatment and he must be released until he is found guilty. “

The post was accompanied by the hashtags BLM, IStandWithDarrell, NoJusticeNoPeace, and RacismIsReal.

As of Thursday, November 25th, the GoFundMe page is no longer available and instead, users see a message: “Sorry, this campaign cannot be found. Please check the link URL and try again. “

A GoFundMe spokesperson confirmed to DailyMail that the fundraiser was removed from the platform because it violated GoFundMe’s Terms of Service and that Norton was banned from using the site.

“Fundraising with misuse is very rare and we take all complaints very seriously. Our team works with law enforcement to report concerns and assist them in any investigations they deem necessary, ”the spokesman said.

The Epoch Times contacted a GoFundMe rep for comment.

Waukeshi Police Chief Dan Thompson said Monday that there is no evidence that Sunday’s crash was a terrorist attack or that the suspect knew anyone at the parade. Officials do not disclose the reasons for the case.

Thompson identified among the killed four women aged 52 to 79 years and a man 81 years old. They were identified as Virginia Sorenson, 79; Leanna Owens, 71 Tamara Durand, 52; Jane Kulich, 52; and Wilhelm Hospel, 82.

Thompson said police did not pursue the suspect when he entered the parade route, as stated in previous media reports from anonymous sources. According to the chief, the officer shot him to stop him.

Brooks has two open criminal cases in Milwaukee County. In one case, filed on November 5, he was charged with resisting or obstructing an officer’s actions, reckless threat, hooliganism, jumping on bail, and beating. The records show that a $ 1,000 cash bond was placed on Friday.

On Monday, the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s office released a statement detailing the charges against Brooks and said it is conducting an internal review of the decision, which includes Brook’s bail recommendation.

“The State’s recommendation for bail in this case was unreasonably low in light of the nature of the recent charges and pending charges against Mr. Brooks,” the statement said.

A lawyer representing Brooks in a separate case told The Epoch Times that he cannot comment on the matter because he is representing him in another case.
