The use of masks is no longer mandatory in health centers and hospitals in the Community of Madrid starting this Wednesday after the reductions registered in the region in the incidence of respiratory viruses, which in the case of influenza decreased from 81, 3 cases . per 100,000 inhabitants.
The number is significantly lower than the 159 last week and the 177 last week, when the winter peak was reached, the highest since 2019. However, the level of infection remains above the epidemic threshold.
The Ministry of Health established the mandatory nature of masks in health centers on January 10 on an “indefinite” basis, although there is the possibility of setting their use as a “recommendation” in communities that show to reduce the data in the last two weeks sharply. respiratory infections.
Once the requirements have been met, the decree that will eliminate this obligation will be published this Wednesday in the Official Gazette of the Community of Madrid (BOCM), so that the use of the mask will only be a recommendation, sources confirmed to Europa Press in the Ministry of Health.
The Community of Madrid defended from the first time the use of the mask as a recommendation in the case of showing symptoms of respiratory infection and in the case of vulnerable people such as the elderly and immunosuppressed. Despite the Ministry’s order, the Minister of Community Health, Fátima Matute, has repeated several times that there is no “state of emergency or public health alert” to justify this measure.
In the same line, he defended that it had no effect on reducing the incidence of respiratory viruses, with a downward trend in the region that was already known before it was implemented. “We continue the awareness of the Community of Madrid to educate the responsibility and, of course, not to alarm the population because this flu epidemic is smaller than in other years and, of course, it does not have many deaths or higher rate of income. ,” he defended in media statements this Monday.
