This Saturday, August 19th, the sensitive death of Graciela Garza Arocha, renowned chef and founder of the La Canasta restaurant in Saltillo.
Relatives of the businesswoman confirmed VANGUARDIA’s death, which occurred at the age of 83 after suffering from pulmonary fibrosis for several months.
As other local media has reported, Garza Arocha opened La Canasta in 1965 alongside his sister Rebeca and since then it has become an iconic spot for the city.
In 2018, the chef received the Saltillo Award for her importance in the city’s culinary industry. In August last year, Garza Arocha received an award from the Fundación Vendimia Coahuila for his career in culinary arts.
In this regard, the chef of the Don Artemio restaurant, Juan Ramón Cárdenas, lamented the death of his colleague through his Instagram account, calling her a “national reference”.
“My dear and cherished friend ‘Gachis’ has always been an inspiration to me. His restaurant La Canasta, a national benchmark, his love for Saltillo and especially his work for Parque Maravillas. WE WILL MISS YOU!
May God enlighten your path and lead you to His home where great souls belong.”
On Facebook, Ivonne Orozco, owner of Las Delicias de mi General restaurant, emphasized Garza Arocha’s importance as a role model for women who dedicate themselves to cooking, describing her as a person who is “ahead of her time, visionary and persistent”.
“An example of wanting to make La Canasta a benchmark for the city and a place where she will always be present – through her dishes, this furniture and this nostalgic bar.” May the doors open to you. May the orphan rice be the welcome supper in your new home where joy resides for your soul. Rest in peace. Thank you because you have always received and treated me with great affection and it was mutual.
His family reported that the funeral service will be held in public at Capillas Renacimiento this Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
