Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry has fired and replaced the chief prosecutor, who is seeking to bring charges against him in the July assassination of President Jovenel Moise.
Prosecutor Ben-Ford Claude wrote to the judge on Tuesday, stating that telephone records showed that on the morning of July 7, just hours after the case, the prime minister and Joseph Felix Badio ( Joseph Felix Badio made two calls, and the latter was wanted by the police in connection with the assassination of Moise. The president was shot dead in his home.
Claude said he asked Prime Minister Henry to discuss the evidence. Claude also asked the Haitian immigration authorities to issue an order prohibiting Henry from leaving the country.
In a letter issued on Tuesday but dated the day before, the prime minister’s office stated that the prosecutor had been fired due to an undisclosed “administrative error”. The office posted a tweet late on Tuesday announcing the appointment of Franz Luis Just to succeed Claude as the chief prosecutor.
More than 40 suspects were arrested in the investigation into the killing of Moise, including 18 former Colombian soldiers and two Haitian Americans. Badio is still at large.
The political moderate and neurosurgeon Henry was appointed prime minister by Moise a few days before his death to ease friction between competitors and reach a new consensus.
