Haiti’s main newspaper halts print production amid crisis

Port-au-Prince, October 27 (Prensa Latina) Haiti’s main newspaper Le Noveliste today published its last printed edition due to the impossibility of obtaining the fuel needed for its production.

The directors of the newspaper, founded in 1898 and considered the dean of the national press, pointed out that they already had exhausted stocks of paper and the lack of hydrocarbons did not allow for their distribution.

However, the newspaper will continue to inform people through its digital version, which will be available free of cost, he specified.

“The management of Le Noveliste hopes that the serious security problems that hindered the production and distribution of the newspaper will be resolved to the satisfaction of all within a reasonable time so that everything can return to normal,” the short note concluded.

The newspaper is the oldest in the US in French language and had to be closed only twice before this crisis: in 1915 during the North American occupation, and in 2010 when an earthquake prevented it from going out for a few months.

After the deadly earthquake that claimed the lives of more than 200,000 people, it became a multimedia in print and digital formats and sports, cultural and youth supplements, among other sections.

For a month and a half, armed gangs have been blocking the distribution of fuel in Haiti, crippling economic activity, while jeopardizing the operations of key services such as sanitation and water purification.

Schools were also unable to resume curriculum, while banks, embassies, markets, factories and others significantly reduced or closed their hours.

The police tried several times to recover the area where the terminal is located, however, the operation failed.
