Head of California’s largest union arrested for theft, fraud

SAN FRANCISCO — The head of California’s largest union was arrested Friday, a day after the key worker was charged with grand theft and tax fraud.

SEIU California executive director Alma Hernandez and her husband, Jose Moscoso, were charged Thursday with allegedly underreporting nearly $1.4 million in income between the 2014 and 2018 tax years.

Another complaint alleged that Hernandez, while serving on a political action committee for the Democratic state Senate nominee in 2014, approved payments of $11,700 to her husband for services he did not provide.

Moscoso also reportedly did not disclose that his air duct-cleaning business had multiple employees, resulting in non-payment of wages of more than $300,000.

According to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office website, Hernandez was held in the Sacramento County Main Jail and was ineligible for bail.

SEIU California said Hernandez, 42, who had led the union for 11 years, had resigned.

“We are deeply concerned about the allegations against Alma Hernandez,” SEIU California State Council President Bob Schoonover wrote in a statement. “We have accepted Ms Hernandez’s resignation, and we have fully cooperated with the authorities on this matter and will continue to do so.”

Reuters was not able to immediately contact Hernandez, Moscoso or their lawyers.
