Health withdrew the mandatory use of masks in health centers

The Ministry of Health will send to the health departments of the Valencian Community a resolution from the General Directorate of Public Health to announce the withdrawal of the mandatory use of masks in health centers and social health, which was established on January 5 as a preventive measure. due to the rebound in respiratory virus infections, when the incidence reached 1,501 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. This measure will be implemented starting tomorrow, after its publication in the Official Gazette of the Generalitat Valenciana.

In this sense, the Minister of Health, Marciano Gomez, explained that the decision “responds to the remarkable reduction recorded in the last three weeks in the community in the incidence of acute respiratory infections (ARI) and severe acute respiratory infections (SARI), which is currently at 830 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. and in 15.7% of cases, respectively, according to data provided by the Epidemiology Service of the General Directorate of Public Health.”

In addition, the minister indicated that the decision follows the instructions of the Ministry of Health, which established a continuous reduction in the incidence rates in two weeks as a requirement for the removal of the mandatory mask.

The Minister of Finance, Economy, and Public Function and spokesperson of the Valencian Government, Ruth Merino, stated during the press conference after the Plenary Session of the Consell: “We ask for the caution and responsibility of the citizens.” “Despite the withdrawal of the mandatory use of masks, the management of health departments may, depending on the incident, establish the use of masks,” he clarified.

The data shows that the incidence rate of ARI has decreased by 44.7% since January 5. Likewise, the incidence of severe acute respiratory infections has decreased by 58.2% since the same date.

The incidence behaves similarly in the most vulnerable age groups of people, such as those under 4 years of age and those over 65, where there is a reduction of 28.3% and 44.8%, respectively.

On the other hand, the Minister of Health emphasized that despite the withdrawal of the widespread mandatory use of masks, the management of health departments, supported by their protocols and recommendations from the Preventive Medicine Services, was able to establish the mandatory use of a mask in addition to the established indications, depending on the epidemiological situation and the particular structural and functional characteristics of the dependent centers.

The Minister recalled that the vaccination campaign is still ongoing and health centers will continue to administer doses of influenza and COVID-19 vaccines without the need for an appointment, to improve the vaccination of the population.
