Ontario Chaffee Community Show Band “Rhapsody in Blue: The Music of George Gershwin” on Monday, June 20 at 7:30 p.m. Chaffee High School at Gardiner W. Spring Auditorium, 1245 N. Euclid Avenue, Ontario campus. ,
Admission is free, and the Woodwind Celebration Ensemble will present a pre-concert performance at 7 p.m. in the auditorium lobby.
The narrator for the concert will be David Allen, a columnist for the Southern California newsgroup, and Ontario mayor Proteam Alan Wapner.
The concert features a selection of music by George Gershwin, highlighted by a performance of “Rhapsody in Blue”. The soloists include the band’s assistant director Pat Arnold; singers Marilyn Sherwood and Brian Detwiller; guest conductor and cello soloist Matthew Keating; and pianist Maria Perez.
Marilyn Sherwood will sing “Embraceable You,” “The Man I Love” and “Summertime,” “Porgy and Bess” and Brian Detwiler will sing “I Got Plenty of Nuttin” and “They Can Take That Away From Me.” .” Pat Arnold will be the featured vocalist on “Our Love Is Here to Stay.”
Matthew Keating, who is the executive director of the Claremont Community School of Music, will conduct several pieces and be the cello soloist in the arrangement of “It Ain’t Needly So”.
Maria Perez, who has been a member of the piano faculty at the Claremont Community School of Music since 1993, will perform Gershwin’s Prologue No. 1, “Rhapsody in Blue” and “I Got Rhythm” arrangements for solo piano.
Ontario Chaffee Community Show Band, founded in 1985 by R. Jack Mercer, now under the direction of Gabe Petroselli and assistant directors David Schaffsma and Pat Arnold. The band members represent at least two dozen communities throughout Southern California.
