Here Are the Winners of the 31st Congressional District’s Art Contest

San Bernardino High School student Janah Parafina took first place in this year’s Congressional Art Competition for California’s 31st Congressional District for her painting “A Night Out.”

Rep. Pete Aguilar, D-San Bernardino, recently announced the 31st District winners, including Candy Qu of Los Osos High School in Rancho Cucamonga, who created her artwork “Bubbles of Opportunity,” and Rialto High School student Melissa Finished second for Cordova Sendajas. Received third place for his artwork “Carmen”.

The first place winner’s artwork will be displayed for one year at the US Capitol Building in Washington, DC, and the second and third place winners will have their work displayed at the Garcia Center for the Arts in San Bernardino.

According to a news release, Paraffina’s inspiration for his painting “A Night Out” was the California Theater of the Performing Arts in San Bernardino.

“I recently used it as inspiration after entering the same theater for the first time. Win or not, I wanted to show some history of San Bernardino through my painting and hope that some people learned something new. I am grateful for the award and will have the opportunity to try it with the new supply,” Parafina said in the news release.

“Every year, I am impressed by the creative and talented students across the Inland Empire,” Aguilar said in the news release. “This year’s presentations were no different. They have all captured our community beautifully, and I am extremely proud to be able to showcase this original artwork and talent from home with my colleagues at the US Capitol.”
