A dozen students from kindergarten to eighth grade were honored at the November 9 meeting of the Chino Hills City Council.
He is the winner of Chino Hills’ 24th annual Celebrate the Family poster and essay-writing competition.
According to a news release, the competition was started in 1998 by the Chino Hills Healthy Cities Steering Committee to celebrate the family during National Family Week.
This year’s theme was “Every family has a story, we are welcome,” and 12 winners were chosen from over 560 entries from eighth grade students in kindergarten. The judges presented prizes to the first, second and third place winners in each of the four age categories.
Each first-place winner received a family four-pack of season passes for Knott’s Berry Farm. The second and third place winners each received a $50 gift card to Chaparral 300 Bowling and a $50 gift card to Harkins Theater.
The Loving Savior of the Hills Lutheran School received a plaque for the highest participation of students in all age groups. The school’s vice principal, Erica Oaxaca, accepted the award at the city council meeting.
The judges of the competition included city council members Brian Johs and Peter Rogers; Parks and Recreation Commissioners Samantha James-Perez, Greg Higgins and Jennifer Holtkamp; former Parks and Recreation Commissioner Joe Schaefer; and city employees.
Following are the winners in each age group.
• Kindergarten: Claire Mulia, Rolling Ridge Elementary School, 1st Place; Zoe Ortega, Hidden Trails Elementary School, 2nd; Emily Hay, Wickman Elementary School, 3rd.
• Grades 1-3: Rofanie Hu, Eagle Canyon Elementary School, I; Kaira Gupta, Country Springs Elementary School, 2nd; Jayden Park, Hidden Trails Elementary School, 3rd.
• Grades 4-6: Alina Kim, Rolling Ridge Elementary School, 1st; Emma Shiozaki, Wickman Elementary School, 2nd; Nancy Dong, Wickman Elementary School, 3rd.
• Grades 7-8: Brandon Nava, Lover Savior of the Hills Lutheran School, I; Kaitlyn Cabral, Canyon Hills Junior High School, 2nd; Caitlian Linky, Lover Savior of the Hills Lutheran School, 3rd.
