Here’s why Tiktok, Instagram are a threat to Google

Today’s youth prefer social media platforms than Google services for search activities. For example, someone between the ages of 18 and 24 would prefer to visit TikTok or Instagram when they are looking for places to visit than Google Maps or Search. And this trend is hugely affecting the core Google services.

“We keep learning over and over again that new Internet users don’t have the expectations and mindset that we have become accustomed to. The questions they ask are completely different, as are Google senior vice president Prabhakar Raghavan. Reported by Petapixel.

“These users don’t type in keywords, but rather discover content in new, more immersive ways,” he says.

“In our study, like about 40 percent of young people, when they are looking for a place to have lunch, they don’t turn to Google Maps or Search,” he adds. “They go to TikTok or Instagram.”

The comments are based on internal research that included a survey of 18 to 24 groups in the US. A World Nation News report said the data, which is not yet public, could be added to Google’s competition site, along with other data.

Why do young people prefer social media to Google services?

Responding to why the trend is growing, Raghavan said, young people are generally interested in more “visually rich forms” of information search and, in the future, their demand for visual content will replace Google search.

Last year, Google told The Information that they were working on deals that would allow them to index Instagram and TikTok videos in Google Search. Currently, a user can input a search for a keyword, followed by the word “TikTok” and the Google search engine will return rows of results for the first TikTok video from any standard web page.

Meanwhile, Tiktok is also becoming a threat to Meta’s Instagram. And this competition has prompted Instagram to focus on video and adopt more TikTok-like features.

This week, Instagram put a steady emphasis on video when they revealed that the app is testing a new Live Producer tool that allows creators to go live from the desktop using external streaming software. Last month, Zuckerberg announced that Instagram was testing a full-screen feed that strongly mimics the company’s rival TikTok.
