The off-duty Customs and Border Protection agent who killed Texas gunman Salvador Ramos was a hair’s width away from being shot in the head—as evident in a photo of the hero’s bullet-ripped hat.
Fox News reported that the agent — a member of CBP’s elite Border Patrol Tactical Unit, or BORTAC — was wearing a hat when he broke into Robb Elementary School, Fox News reported.
A photo obtained by Fox News shows a long wound with a net over a black-and-white cap as the bullet was touching his head.
The officer exchanged rounds with Ramos, who was intercepted inside the fourth class orbit, but the agent managed to kill the gunman before he could commit any more massacres.
The agents – part of the CBP’s Del Rio sector that covers Uvalde – were trained similarly to US special forces.
BORTAC agents are taught overseas to deal with terror threats and other chaos, such as riots at ICE detention facilities, NBC reported.

“US Border Patrol agents respond to a law enforcement request for assistance in an active shooter situation inside Robb Elementary School in Uvalde. Upon entering the building, agents and other law enforcement officers were subjected to gunfire from the subject.” , which was barred from inside,” said Marsha Espinosa, assistant secretary of public affairs for the Department of Homeland Security, said in a tweet on Tuesday.
“By risking their lives, these Border Patrol agents and other officers put themselves between the shooter and the children to divert the shooter’s attention from potential victims and save lives,” she said.
