High School Football: Clayton Valley’s Decision To Strike Against San Ramon Valley Pays Off

CONCORD – Fourth and fourth quarters of the fourth quarter on Friday night, Clayton Valley Charter coach Tim Murphy flirted with the idea of dodging the ball for a first hit rather than a boat, but his instinct told him otherwise.

The choice was correct. When defender Brenden Busch intercepted the ball from the punt, the Ugly Eagles were fined five yards away. Now Murphy and his team were forced to hit the ball.

As the ball flew off and bounced forward, San Ramon Valley’s Joshua Jackson tried to pick up the ball quickly but was unable to catch it cleanly. The Ugly Eagles regained fumble and scored later to push their lead to two touchdowns.

“Puntas never work,” Murphy said jokingly. “Usually nine out of 10 times I’m going to pick fourth and four, but I’m glad I didn’t, because if we missed, the game would be on me.”

Instead, the Ugly Eagles won 28-21.

Murphy said this win has changed a bit, especially after a slight 19-18 defeat to California last week.

“For the most part, we’ve fixed a lot of mistakes made in the past week,” Murphy said.

The Ugly Eagles struck first when defender Brenden Bush linked up with his twin brother Alex Bush for a 12-yard touchdown pass to bring Clayton Valley to 7-0 from 5:42 to the end of the first quarter.

San Ramon Valley responded on his next move when quarterback Jack Quigley pitched a 19-yard pass to Tanner Salisbury to tie the game at the end of the first quarter.

For the seconds remaining before the first half, Clayton Valley went forward. Bush sent the ball from 46 yards and was able to find Cody DeMartini in the end zone, putting the Ugly Eagles ahead 14-7 at half-time.

“We are working on this in practice,” Bush said. “I tossed it to him and Cody did a great job.”

Clayton Valley added another touch in the fourth quarter, extending the lead to 21-7, but San Ramon Valley continued to struggle.

Quigley threw his second touchdown of the game to Jackson to keep the score within reach at 21-14 with 8:59 to finish.
