High school football: Friday’s Prep Bowl predictions

MINNEOTA (13-0) VS. MAYER LUTHERAN (12-1), 10:00

The two dominant teams meet for what should be a fantastic opening for the Prep Bowl. Mayer Lutheran’s only defeat occurred in the first week, and he avenged that defeat by convincingly defeating his first week rival Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop in the section final. But Minneota just doesn’t give up points. The Vikings have nine lockouts this season, and there would have been 10 if Rashford-Peterson hadn’t scored 85 seconds before the end of the state’s semi-finals last week. Our choice: Minneota 13, Mayer Lutheran 6

CHATFIELD (12-1) VS. CENTRAL WEST / Ashby (11-1), 13:00

It is likely that Chatfield will not have star quarterback Sam Baker, who was banned from the game because he was kicked out of Chatfield’s semi-finals after he received two penalties for unsporting behavior. The Baker family is reportedly fighting a suspension from service in court, which is expected to be decided on Friday morning. But these activities usually do not work. However, Chatfield’s efforts can be reciprocal. Our choice: Chatfield 21, West Central Area / Ashby 14

Casson-Mantorville rallied from a deficit in the fourth quarter with two touchdowns in the state semi-finals and knocked out tournament favorite Becker. Hutchinson’s only defeat this season went to Becker. Led by quarterback Matt Donovan, Casson-Mantorville is one of the most trusted teams in the state. This is important at this stage. Our choice: Casson-Mantorville 26, Hutchinson 21

LAKEVILLE SOUTH (12-0) VS. MAPLE GROVE (11-1), 19:00

Shakopee is the only team that can claim to have actually tested Cougars throughout the season. If the other team is capable of such a feat, it will be Maple Grove. The Crimson cruise through the 6A class playoffs was spectacular. Their defense dominates and Derrick Jameson is impressive running back. However, Lakeville South still looks stronger in every way. Cougars are talented, tough and well trained. They have answered all the challenges over the past two years. Why should this stop now? Our choice: Lakeville South 28, Maple Grove 17

* All State Championship games are played at US Bank Stadium.
