High school football: shorthand dominates De La Salle California

CONCORD – With his head coach and several players at home due to COVID-19 protocols, De La Salle got off to a poor start on Friday night.

The Spartans threw the ball away in the first game and the undefeated California drives for a touchdown.

But then Journey McCoy went to work.

De La Salle Jr. set up the tying score with a long kickoff return. Then he made a pick-six. Then he intercepted another pass to set up another TD before the first quarter ended.

By then, the Spartans were on their way to a 52–14 victory, which capped off a most unusual week at the Concorde campus.

Head coach Justin Alumbagh, who has been fully vaccinated since February, tested positive for COVID on Monday after learning of a coronavirus case in the team.

Asymptomatic, Allambaugh set up shop in his home office, watched the game on a stream and communicated with offensive coaches via Bluetooth technology.

Defensive coordinator Nate Kenyon was the acting head coach.

“It was a crazy week,” Kenyon said. “It started on Monday that our kids are coming in and don’t really know what is happening. Lots of moving pieces. Every day of this week, it was a little less busy until today.”

The game began with quarterback Luke Durmon unable to spoil a false picture on the first play and recovering at the California de la Salle 44.

After a sixth-place finish by the Bay Area News Group and a dramatic home win over the Clayton Valley Charters, the Grizzlies needed eight plays to reach the final field.

Trevor Rund ran 4 when he took a 7–0 lead.

“It was cool,” said California coach Danny Calcagno. “We were in it the first few minutes. But they let you down.”

McCoy’s big kickoff return after California’s opening score placed third-place De La Salle on the Grizzlies 27. After four plays, Durman scored on a 7-yard run to make it 7-7.

In the second game of California’s next possession, Teddy Burruss’s pass was deflected and caught in the hands of McCoy, who returned an interception for a touchdown from 35 yards to give the home team a 14–7 advantage.

The Grizzlies (6-1) crossed midfield in their next series. But that campaign ended when McCoy stepped in front of a receiver near the edge to prevent another pass.

“Everyone who was out felt I should play for them – and that’s what I did,” McCoy said,

After McCoy’s second interception, De La Salle (5-2) drives for another touchdown as Durman linked Bryant Meredith to set up a 20-yard TD run from Charles Greer that widened the lead to 21-7. done.

California reduced the deficit to 21-14 when Burras completed a 5-yard pass to Jake Calcagno that ended an 11-play, 80-yard drive.

But this was as close as it would get.

“Our kids always work hard and that’s what I love about them,” said Jake’s father, Danny Calcagno. “Obviously we were matchless tonight, but that was our goal. Don’t worry about the scoreboard. Just play football for 48 minutes.”

Greer finished with two TDs in 146 yards and 12 carries. Damony Perkins went for 133 yards and two TDs in eight touches.

Durmon also ran for two touchdowns, and McCoy scored on a short run, replacing Durmon behind center in the fourth quarter.

“I talked to Journey throughout the season and he played today the way I expected him to play for the rest of the year,” Kenyon said. “I’m hoping he can keep it up to us and run with it from here on out.”

Alambagh has been approved to return at the end of next week. He is expected to be the full team for next Friday’s game against the San Ramon Valley.
